How Do You Say That?

Mise en Place, or "Everything in its place", is the art of preparing everything you will need for a recipe or menu. It not only serves you in the kitchen, but can lend assistance in many other areas of life! A lovely little phrase, but how is it pronounced? Simply put, 'mise = sounds like geese', 'en = in', 'place = sounds like floss'. Meese in ploss, said quickly. Yet, the pronunciation is of little importance. Performing the act before culinary tasks will make life much sweeter and your dishes more delectable!

Where to Begin?

Throwing together some simple food still requires a bit of prep, but if you are following recipes or creating deliciousness that calls for more in-depth work, mise en place comes in handy for making the task easier, quicker, without mistake and fun! Even a simple salad can have many parts. The first act of mise en place is going over your recipe/formula. Go over every ingredient and read the instructions thoroughly before beginning the task. Once you have reviewed the recipe, visit the ingredients once more and gather each one, carefully measuring, chopping, etc. until you have all the beautiful parts ready for assembly. Plan the steps in your head so you can move smoothly through the process. Now you are ready to put your culinary creation together! Follow the instructions and voila! Yum yum to the tum tum!

Mise en Place for Life!

"A place for everything and everything in it's place", is a proverbial notion that physical items shall all have a place to be stored and be in that place while not in use. Raising two humans and having other people around me who do not follow this notion has been hard. I am a strong believer and find calm with minimal and more calm when this minimal is where it belongs! Over the years I have become more relaxed about mess and about the fact things will not be all "perfectly" placed. Mise en Place, or as I like to call it, the act of getting your shit together, can be quite useful in everyday life as-well-as in the kitchen. Whether a project for work, home improvement, a cleaning plan for the household or any other life 'project', the organization that mise en place provides can be life changing!
